WHAT IS WORLD YOUTH DAY?

Since the first meeting held in St. Peter’s Square in 1986, youth and young adults around the world have been gathering, beginning a tradition celebrating the apostolic mission and commitment of young people. Pope John Paul II, continued to describe the days as “occasions for young people to profess and proclaim faith in Christ with ever greater joy…to discuss their most intimate aspirations, experience the Church as communion, make a commitment to the urgent task of new evangelization.”

The Diocese of Harrisburg continues this tradition in several ways:

  • By coordinating pilgrimages to international World Youth Day: 2011 Madrid, Spain.
  • By coordinating with and for young people a Diocesan celebration of World Youth Day on Palm Sunday.
  • By making available the resources for parishes to celebrate National World Youth Day on the 30th Sunday of Ordinary Time each year.
